Ah, spring! The season of renewal, blossoms, and warm sunshine kissing your skin. But for many of us, it's also the season of sneezing fits, itchy eyes, and that all-too-familiar foggy-headed feeling. If you are battling the annual pollen invasion, know that you're not alone—and, more importantly, know that nature has your back.
At Turtle Moon Wellness, we believe the earth provides everything we need to thrive, including gentle and effective ways to manage seasonal pollen allergies*. Today, I'm sharing my favorite natural remedies that have helped me and many others breathe easier in the springtime—without synthetic chemicals or drowsy side effects—just pure, natural relief.
If you've been around Turtle Moon Wellness for a while, you know I can't stop singing the praises of raw honey. And for good reason! Raw, local honey contains traces of pollen from your environment. Regularly consuming small amounts helps your body build a tolerance to the allergens that cause your symptoms.
I remember when I first started incorporating raw honey into my daily routine. After a few weeks, I noticed my usual spring sniffles were far less intense. A spoonful a day (straight off the spoon, drizzled over yogurt, or stirred into tea) can work wonders. Just be sure to choose raw, unfiltered honey—preferably from a source close to home.
I’m lucky to have a source of raw, unfiltered honey that is very local. My partner, Ray, runs BeeLove Apiaries, with hives scattered across Fairfield County. The honey he carefully harvests from our hives is one of our most popular products.
There's something so comforting about a warm cup of herbal tea, and certain herbs can relieve allergies. Some of the best ones include:
Nettle Leaf Tea—A natural antihistamine, nettle helps reduce inflammation and ease congestion.
Ginger and Turmeric Tea—These powerhouse roots are anti-inflammatory, helping to calm irritated sinuses and throats.
Many Turtle Moon Herbal Teas contain nettle. Restorative Tea is a good choice because it contains nettle and herbs that support the kidneys, liver, and lymphatic system. When these eliminative organs and the lymph system are functioning well, they can filter the blood and manage allergens more effectively, reducing the strain on the immune system. The Spring and VirusProof Teas would also be good choices.
A steamy cup of tea can provide instant relief. Bonus tip: Add a teaspoon of raw honey for an extra allergy-fighting boost!
Essential oils are one of my favorite natural tools for supporting respiratory health. Diffusing or inhaling certain oils can help clear nasal passages, reduce inflammation, and promote relaxation. Some of the best essential oils for seasonal pollen allergies include:
Eucalyptus – Calms inflammation in the respiratory system. Opens up the airways and helps break up mucus and congestion.
Lavender – Calms inflammation and soothes irritated sinuses. Natural antihistamine.
Peppermint – Provides an instant cooling effect and relieves sinus pressure.
Tea Tree – Soothes allergies and sinus congestion. Helps purify the air and supports immune function.
Chamomile —Excellent antihistamine. Calms inflammation.
Thyme Linalool —Supports the immune system. Offers respiratory support and soothes sinus congestion.
Saro —Similar effect as tea tree or eucalyptus. Aids respiratory calming. Helps to clear mucus and congestion. Relaxes and uplifts.
Try diffusing a blend of eucalyptus, peppermint, and tea tree in your home, or add a drop of lavender oil to a warm compress and place it over your sinuses for relief. An inhaler incorporating German Chamomile, Thyme Linalool, and Saro is very effective. I custom-make inhalers for our customers, so if you want one, get in touch!
Like raw honey, bee pollen can help your body develop resistance to seasonal pollen allergies. It's packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making it a great addition to your wellness routine. The best part? You can sprinkle it over smoothie bowls, mix it into yogurt, or take it straight—whatever works best for you!
The quality of pollen on the market varies, so it's best to research and stick with an organic product.
Did you know that a strong gut can help combat seasonal pollen allergies? Approximately 70% of our immune system resides in our gut, and a well-balanced microbiome plays a key role in how our bodies respond to allergens. The good news is you can easily add probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi to your diet. A high-quality probiotic supplement is just a click away!
Propolis, often called "bee glue," is a natural ally for your immune system, especially during allergy season. Instead of revving up your immune responses like allergens, propolis helps keep things balanced by regulating inflammation and reducing those pesky allergic reactions. Packed with flavonoids, it acts as a natural antihistamine, helping to ease congestion and irritation.
With its antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, propolis supports your body's ability to handle allergens while fighting seasonal bugs. Its antioxidants help lower oxidative stress, boosting your overall immune resilience.
One great way to use propolis is with Turtle Moon's Propolis Spray. It's easy to use when you're under the weather or need relief from allergy symptoms. Whether you want to prevent flare-ups or find quick relief, this bee-derived remedy covers you for a more comfortable spring!
Rinsing your nasal passages with a saline solution can help wash away pollen, dust, and other irritants before they trigger a full-blown allergy attack. A neti pot or saline spray can work wonders, especially after spending time outdoors. Just use distilled or previously boiled water to keep things safe and clean.
The Neti pot is very effective. I also recommend Xclear's Nasal Spray, which contains water, Xylitol (a plant-based sweetener), salt, and grapefruit seed extract.
What we eat plays a massive role in how our bodies handle allergens. Processed foods, refined sugars, and dairy can sometimes exacerbate inflammation, worsening allergy symptoms. Instead, focus on foods that naturally combat inflammation:
Leafy greens (kale, spinach, arugula)
Citrus fruits (rich in vitamin C and flavonoids)
Omega-3s (found in salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts)
Garlic and onions (natural antihistamines)
Bioflavonoids (citrus fruits, berries, parsley, red cabbage, kale, broccoli, green tea, dark chocolate)
You're giving yourself the best shot at a symptom-free spring by nourishing your body with the right foods.
These are some of my favorite supplements for relieving seasonal pollen allergies:
Allergena—A homeopathic remedy that naturally helps your body adjust to seasonal allergens. It relieves sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. Unlike regular antihistamines that only mask symptoms, Allergena works with your immune system to build tolerance over time.
What makes Allergena unique is its zone-specific formula. Each blend includes small amounts of local tree, grass, and weed pollen, helping your body get used to the allergens in your area. This can lead to long-lasting relief, making allergy season more bearable.
It's also free from harsh chemicals and won't make you drowsy, so you can enjoy spring without discomfort. Just take it as directed to help your body find balance.
Quercetin—Another helpful supplement for spring allergies. Found in foods like onions, apples, berries, and stinging nettle, it acts as a natural antihistamine by stabilizing mast cells that release histamine, which is responsible for sneezing and itchy eyes. By reducing histamine release, quercetin alleviates allergy symptoms with fewer side effects than traditional meds.
It's a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, calming your immune system and supporting respiratory health. For the best results, combine quercetin with Bromelain for better absorption. Taking this natural supplement during allergy season can help you feel better and support your immune system.
Real Mushrooms 5 Defenders Powder or Capsules—This product contains a blend of Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, Turkey Tail, and Chaga mushrooms, which may help with allergies due to their immune-supporting properties. This very reputable grower organically sources and extracts its mushrooms to increase the bioavailability of beneficial compounds like beta-glucans. I like to put the powder in my morning coffee.
Managing seasonal allergies with natural remedies is about more than finding quick fixes—it's about nurturing your body, supporting your immune system, and embracing the rhythms of nature. Finding what works best for you might take some trial and error, but every small step makes a difference.
